It all comes down to Art. I love it. My mother is a painter, and a sketcher. Many of my earliest memories consist of watching my mother draw or paint my sister and me. In daycare, my friend and I would be asked to draw Disney murals to hang on their walls for themed months. I achieved the “Art Award” in Junior High. From that point, I took Art classes all the way up to the University level.
I achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Socio-Cultural Anthropology. It contains many facets of Art: History, lore, Emotion, etc. I did not understand the true importance of capturing pieces of our own history, until I got married. Even more so until I had my son, and further than that when my sister called me in hysterics because her husband deleted an entire year’s worth of photos of one of their children.
I had my epiphany… I am to become a photographer. My goal was not just to become a person to take pictures; it was to capture the essence of a mood, or the memory of a period of time. I want my subjects to remember what they looked like, what they were saying, or how they felt at that moment. You will see a baby with cake all over its face, a child dirty from rolling around in the mud, or one person looking in a different direction than everyone else. These are the things that we will remember. We will remember that stage when our child lost their tooth or bumped their chin. We will remember how frustrating it was that we could not get everyone to sit still for the picture, and we will laugh. You cannot capture these moments when you are forced into a pose. These moments are who and what we are.
So to follow the words of my husband, “poses do not create memories.” So why don’t we capture some memories with a box, which happens to be a Nikon.
With much love and sincerity,
Sonia
UPDATE
My photos were selected for display on a popular photography website! I am not sure that I can disclose the name of the website on my page because of copyright infringement, but I have it saved on my hard drive if anyone is interested.
